What is Stormwater?

Stormwater is simply water that originates during rain events as well as during snow & ice melts. Conveyance of stormwater is dependent upon the surface it encounters as it travels, such as pervious or impervious areas. Stormwater may infiltrate the soil, evaporate into the air, or runoff into nearby surface waters.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) created a stormwater program known as the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), in efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of stormwater upon the environment. The Clean Water Act (CWA) regulates quality standards for surface waters such as NPDES, regulating discharges of pollutants into waters. Stormwater control measures (SCM) or stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) are utilized to remove pollutants from stormwater runoff, in addition to providing flood control, reducing downstream erosion, and promotion of groundwater recharge.
